IT’S ALL ABOUT ‘ME ME ME’ … BUT IS IT?
You will have noticed that Untwisted Media does not have a traditional ‘About Us’ page on our website. There was a reason we chose to do this. We didn’t want to make our website all about us! Very corporate/ boring speak that is only self centred can become a big turn off for somebody landing on your website for the first time.
We decided to combine our Home page with some ‘About Us’ style information. We wanted to avoid the ‘me me me’ scenario. We took a conversational approach that we believe is easy to read, digest and understand for anyone coming to visit us for the first time!
We have compiled some of our top tips for helping your Home/About Us page speak to your potential clients in a way that is a little more ‘WE’ than ‘ME’.
TELL A STORY WITHOUT ‘BRAG FILE’ STYLE:
As brands and businesses, you obviously need to be able to tell the story about your business. Website visitors will be keen to learn about your business, what you do and how you can help to improve their lives.
The unfortunate thing is, that many business owners use these pages to list multiple accomplishments, telling a life history without explaining what their business does.
It is fantastic to tell your story in an engaging way. A top tip is to avoid generic corporate talk and use these pages to show off your personality and quirkiness. Having fun while explaining what you do makes you more approachable. Help people to understand how your business solves a pain point for them.
Your Home/About Us page is where you display information about you, your products and your services.
Help your website visitors to understand what they can expect from you on your website. Provide them with information about your products and services. This will be a short insight, not ‘War and Peace’, but let your visitors know that they are in the right place.
Show them what distinguishes your business from your competitors and why people work with you. This can be done in many ways. We took a conversational ‘storytelling’ approach that describes, in detail the process of working with Untwisted Media without using jargon-filled content that becomes boring and not easy to understand.
ORGANISE INFORMATION SO IT IS EASY AND EXCITING TO DIGEST:

Make your page exciting and varied including a mixture of text and video/imaged based content. This makes content easier to digest, particularly if you have a lot of content to display. Large text blocks, are harder to engage with, particularly when it is being viewed on a mobile device.
Use headlines well to organise sections so that it is easy for visitors to know exactly what they are reading and so that they are able to process it with ease and efficiency.
MAKE SURE WEBSITE VISITORS NOW HOW TO CONNECT WITH YOU AND CONTACT YOU:
No contact details can be an expensive mistake. As a minimum, your Home/About Us page should include a way that people can contact you directly: i.e) e-mail address and/or phone number.
Social Media handles provide a means for people to connect with your activity across your Social Media channels to keep up to date with what is happening in your business on a daily basis.
TAKE PEOPLE TO YOUR MOST POPULAR PAGES AND POSTS:
We always explain to our clients that when someone visits your website, you need to virtually hold their hand and guide them to where to go next. You have to make it easy and very clear for visitors to be able to see your products and services.
Make sure you have clear links to your product and service pages from your Home/About Us page.
It is also a good idea to display your most popular or recent blog posts on your Home/About Us page. It is not ok to assume that visitors will automatically go through to your blog page to read your content. By featuring some of your most recent posts on your Home/About Us page, it allows them to see that content and it gives them a choice to click through to your blog if they wish to ‘read more’.
USE SOCIAL PROOF:
Social proof is a very effective way to build trust, authority and credibility. There is nothing wrong with being proud and displaying testimonials from your clients or links and logos to publications where you have been mentioned.
Don’t be shy in doing this part. Other peoples’ recommendations help people to decide if they would like to pick up the phone to call you or send you an enquiry.
